Introduction for the D4.2

The second deliverable of the WP4 is entitled D4.2 Guidelines for mapping into SKOS, dealing with translations.

The D4.1 dealt with the identification and collection of terminology resources in use in the European museums. The terminology resources collected are very different from one to another one: simple list of terms, thesaurus or ontology. Some are monolingual and others are multilingual. Some have a very specific description domain and others a very generic one. Very few of them are already skosified.

Considering the first set of recommendations we made on the D4.1, the WP4 will focus on the elaboration of a core of thesaurus on the basis of the resources collected during the inventory phase. This first version of the Athena thesaurus will allow the semantic mapping of descriptions from museums for the ingestion in the Athena platform.

The object of this second deliverable is to provide guidelines for the museums so they can SKOSify their resources on their own. After a detailed analysis of all the steps and issues implied by this process, we will perform an experiment in order to map and harmonize the existing resources collected. This experiment will help defining and refining the guidelines for mapping into SKOS.

This experiment will also be a reflexion on the possible workflows and methodology in order to set a sustainable organisation for the managment of the Athena thesaurus.

Besides this experiment that will be largely developed on this wiki, a benchmark has also been launched in order to identify tools and methodologies for creating, updating and maintaining terminology resources.

This second report will raise issues and give some solutions for terminology management after the project.
